Chapter 11
I drove back to Helena listening for sounds of urping from the backseat and stressing over what to do about Benny.
So, heâd recognized me. That shouldnât be a big deal, right?
Except heâd looked angry. Very angry.
Which meant my mother had been right.
There was something weird happening on that mountain.
And now Benny obviously thought I knew and had come to spy on him to learn more.
Which meant I, my mother, and Kiska were all potentially at risk. But I had already told Peter about our encounter, and Benny hadnât actually threatened me in any way. Heâd just looked angry.
What did that prove?
Nothing.
I needed proof, and I needed backup both to get and to stay out of sight until I had it.
I pulled over at a gas station and called Rhonda.
She agreed immediately to Kiska and I staying with her for a day or so. Being the great friend she is, she didnât even ask why.
Then I asked her how she felt about communing with nature a bit.
She took that pretty well too. A lot better than Betty did when I called her.
We settled on meeting at Rhondaâs to discuss what had happened. She also agreed to call my mother for me while I ran by my house to grab some clothes and toiletries for me and food for Kiska.
I hadnât done laundry in a bit, so I plucked a pair of jeans off the floor and shoved them in a bag along with clean underwear and a shirt. I hurried as much as I could, but Kiska was already complaining when I got back to the car. I tossed him a dog cookie, which placated him for the moment, and we headed to Rhondaâs.
~~~
I pulled into Rhondaâs to find that she, Betty, and my mom were already there.
I walked in, feeling embarrassed and grim.
My mother, however, was practically spinning around the room in joy. âI knew they were up to something up there. What do you think? Meth⦠or maybeâ¦â Her eyes rounded in anticipation. âGun runnersâ¦â
I wasnât even sure what a gun runner was, or who theyâd be running a gun to, tucked away on a mountain in the National Forest, but I was relieved to see that she didnât seem to blame me for drawing potential criminal attention to us.
The doorbell rang. My mom skipped off to answer it. Nervous as I was, I started to stop her, but she blithely ignored me and soon returned with three steaming pizza boxes.
She plopped the boxes onto Rhondaâs round oak table and told us to dig in. âFighting crime is a hungry business!â
I sighed but took a slice. Kiska stood by hopefully, and feeling guilty for everything, I decided to forgive his marmot snack and tossed him some crust. He swallowed without chewing.
Betty, who appeared to be dressed for bed in silk pajamas and her hair wrapped up in a purple headscarf, leaned back against the couch cushions and asked, âSo, why are we here again?â
I went through our story, emphasizing the darkness of Bennyâs face when he saw me with Kiska.
